Human Resources or HR (an increasingly controversial term) is often mandated with the task of 'developing the organization', a task made difficult by the ambiguity of what constitutes the 'organization'. Is it the policies? The 'services'? The 'culture'? The members of the organization, all of the above or something else?

This presentation will take the stance that an organization is only as competent/productive/ successful as the 'average' employee. (This perspective will be at least as controversial as the 'HR' term.) If this perspective has any merit... what does it mean to 'develop the organization'. What are the skills we 'should' all be developing as we grow as a employee/person - and therefore as an 'organization'?

Some that come immediately to my mind, are

        - Management
        - Leadership
        - Critical Thinking
        - Listening
        - Communicating
        - Logical Reasoning
        - Problem Solving
        - Empathy
        - Trust
        - Esprit de corps
        - Ethics

The challenge is to suggest, without offering insult, that we could *ALL* benefit from improvement in *ALL* of these areas.  This session will explore each of these concepts, demonstrate the value of each through an audience participation or two, anecdotes from the field and demonstrate that we ALL do indeed need improvement in these areas. It will then offer suggestions as to what type of training/education/learning might best improve these skills.

Who Does Quality Assurance?
Now available for downloads

Now available for downloading. For feedback from the live sessions? Click

Continuous changes in technology, engineering catastrophes, and natural disasters have all prompted discussion about quality assurance. Whatever the organizational structure of our development shops, and whatever their titles, your employees aren't in quality assurance business--but you are.

Staff members are typically not allowed to make the big decisions about the product. They don't make strategic decisions, they can't control product scope, nor do they have authority over budget, staffing, schedules, customer relationships, market placement, or development models. So how, exactly, can employees assure quality? And how can you motivate them to do it?

Michael Bolton argues that there's a difference between producing and assuring quality. While they may have control over the quality of the work that they produce, your employees--even those with the "quality assurance" title--cannot assure quality in the product overall, nor should they be asked to do it. Assuring quality is the principal role of management. Yet you can get remarkable results from your staff when you allow intrinsic motivation, encourage critical thinking, and emphasize stories over numbers. Employees extend management's senses, allowing you to see, hear, touch, and even smell problems that might threaten the value of the product, the project, or the business. Employees become motivated by a culture of exploration, discovery, investigation, learning, so that managers who run the project can make informed decisions about quality and risk. Join this Webinar to learn efficient, effective ways to engage your employees in a quality mindset, delivering the results and the information you need so that you can assure quality.

Michael Bolton is a tester, consultant, and trainer. He is the co-author (with senior author James Bach) of Rapid Software Testing, a course that presents a methodology and mindset for testing software expertly in uncertain conditions and under extreme time pressure. Michael's a leader in the context-driven software testing movement, with 20 years of experience testing, developing, managing, and writing about software. Currently, he leads DevelopSense, a Toronto-based consultancy. Prior to that, he was with Quarterdeck Corporation for eight years, during which he managed the company's flagship products and directed project and testing teams both in-house and around the world.

The Human Side Of Issue Management

Managing issues is one of the essential components of a project manager’s role. Successful project management, after all, isn’t about whether or not we have issues arise on our project – it’s about how we respond to them when they occur.

Problems arise on projects, and they need to be addressed. Sadly, the way that issues are responded to is not always the most effective. We are hardwired to respond, but in ways that can make it harder rather than easier to resolve. Our team members, our sponsors and us as project managers all have tendencies and patterns of response. Understanding, anticipating and being able to shape these patterns is key to becoming a more successful project manager.

Join Mark Mullaly as he explores the human side of issue management. You’ll learn the negative patterns of behaviour that can undermine issue management, be able to recognize the patterns as they emerge and develop strategies to address them more proactively and positively. You won’t avoid issues on your projects, but you may not dread them quite as much either.

What does the 80/20 Rule have in common with the following? 'Arrive early', "Say Please and Thank you!" and "To Do lists"? - this isn't a trick question. The answer is one that will possibly change your life if you haven't already glommed onto it.

We have an unusual ability. It's one we can't really avoid using since it's hardwired into how we experience the world. We can see patterns. Some of the patterns are blindingly obvious, other less so. Patterns, or structure if you prefer, help us make sense of the world.

In this session Peter will expand on this simple idea and explore how we can take advantage of the obvious patterns and highlight the less obvious ones. If you want to place this webinar into a category? (see you see what YOU did there?) Then file it under Productivity... or maybe under Coping... or perhaps under 'Life Hacking'... or under Philosophy... listen in and decide for yourself. My promise? You'll take something away you'll be able to use in the office and your daily life.

Keeping Our Cool: Stress & the PM
Now Available for downloading

Some of us thrive on stress. Others of us only seem to. For some, we seek to avoid it at all costs.

Stress in projects is inevitable. Many projects are inherently ambiguous and uncertain, and all projects have some level of risk – which means that things might go wrong. Added to this we have the complexities of dealing with politics, tight deadlines and trying to manage unreasonable expectations. These are the critical ingredients that contribute to us experiencing stress.

For each of us, however, we experience stress in different ways. What we respond to as stress and how we respond to it is not consistent. For all of us, however, it does impact us – and we are often less aware of the impacts than we might like to think.

While we need to manage under stress, we need to make sure it doesn’t manage us. In this presentation, Mark Mullaly explores the subject of stress in a project environment, and how we can manage it more effectively.

A Mess of Change Management Models

Now Available for downloading

In addition to their own personal experiences and observations, Change Management Consultants draw from a variety of sources for their understanding of how people and organizations respond to Change. Sadly? Many of these sources aren't typically found in the 'Management' section of the book store.

In this session, Peter de Jager and Daryl Conner (www.connerpartners.com/ ) each examined one of their personal Change Management touchstones. Peter provided a short overview of Everett Rogers' 'Diffusion of Innovation' and Daryl addressed some of the issues raised by Thomas Kuhn in his classic 'The Structure of Scientific Revolutions'.

After each overview, there was a discussion between the presenters on some of the points raised, and an opportunity to field some questions from the listeners.

This was a very different format from past webinars, but what fun would life be without a little bit of Change from time to time?

Difficult Or Different? Effective Communication Strategies
 Now Available for downloading

We have all encountered people that, from the outset, we communicated with exceptionally well. There are also those who we clash with, consistently and repeatedly. Occasionally, a productive relationship can also get derailed. These situations all draw from fundamental truths about interpersonal communication that can be understood, anticipated and therefore managed.

Psychology has offered many insights into how we interact. Science is now providing further perspectives into how these principles work physiologically and neurologically. These influences shape how we express ourselves, how we make decisions and how we communicate with others. By understanding and having an appreciation for the differences in not just ourselves but in those we work with, support, and lead, can strongly influence how we communicate.

This presentation provided guidance in developing effective communication strategies, as well as essential cautions in identifying what is less likely to work. If you communicate in the workplace (and who doesn’t?) then listen in as Mark Mullaly explores the communication challenges that we all face, and provides concrete strategies and structures by which we can improve our communication skills.

A Ramble through Gambles: A Look at Risk Management*see note below!
Now available for downloading.

Risk Management is, in a word, complicated. Hmm... not strong enough - make that two words, it's extremely complicated.

It's complicated because it deals with at least three totally different forms of ignorance. We also need to take the psychology of risk perception into account, something that differs wildly from one person to the next. On top of this mess, we can throw on the social culture surrounding risk. The result? A topic convoluted enough for a lifetime's worth of study.

For all the above reasons and ones I haven't mentioned yet, there is no consistent measure of what is a 'good' risk versus what is a 'bad' risk. A risk I am more than willing to make, might be something that you'd never take. More frustrating? The risks I assume in a specific endeavour are NOT the same risks you assume when you attempt the exact same action!

This short (50 minute) session identifys most of the factors that contribute to the complexity of Risk Management. It will also suggest a plan of action for addressing a risk and putting together the framework of a Risk Management Strategy.

*Note. This is embarrassing. There is one glaring error in the presentation and on the slides. Slide #41 to be precise.
The expected outcome on the chance game is NOT a $0.80 gain, but a $0.20 gain on your $1.00 bet. This
doesn't affect the conclusion, but it is still both frustrating and embarrassing - sorry about that.

If you wish? It sort of proves my point that we're not really very good at probability. Double, triple and then rechecking again is always called for. This one slipped through. Mea Culpa. Mea Culpa. Mea Maxima Culpa.

Finding Our Inner Leader: A Primer For PMs
Available for Downloading

So. This project management thing. You’ve got your templates, you’ve got your processes, you’ve got your PMP. So it’s all good, right? Well, that depends…

Truly managing a project means taking on a broader role: it involves managing the expectations of stakeholders, maintaining the focus of our team and keeping our sponsors and steering committees aligned. These are not management or administrative responsibilities: they are leadership ones. If project managers truly want to be effective in their role, they are going to have to take on the mantle of leadership.

Of course, what leadership is remains an elusive topic. There are thousands of books and hundreds of thousands of articles on the subject. Leadership models range from facilitative ones to those where we take on a command-and-control approach. Which of these is leadership, though? And what are we as project managers supposed to do when we realize that our tools and methodologies aren't enough, and we need to find a way to grow our leadership abilities?

In this webinar, Mark Mullaly explores the leadership challenges that project managers face, and provides concrete strategies and structures by which we can evaluate the leadership style we need to adopt to be effective.

Project Management/Change Management: Bridging the Gap

Available for downloading.

Project management and change management practitioners tend to operate in isolation, which hurts both sides. There are plenty of reasons for the two disciplines to be allies, not the least of which is the dismal (30%) success rate of the average change initiative.

In reality, project management and change management are not only complementary, they are interdependent. The value they can generate together has synergistic potential well beyond what either can accomplish on its own. What this requires, however, is more teamwork across their professional boundaries. In particular, each side needs to share more “lessons learned” than they have in the past—lessons that could be beneficial to the other discipline.

In an effort to begin bridging the gap, Daryl will devote most of the webinar session to sharing key learnings from the field of change management that he believes could enhance the effectiveness of project management:

* How “executable” are your projects?
* How can you determine early on the point at which an initiative is particularly susceptible to falling short of its objectives?
* What client and practitioner predispositions are the best indicators of change success?

Attaining Value in Project Management

Attaining Value in Project Management – Practical Insights For Organizations

The results of the international research project ‘Understanding the Value of Project Management’ provide compelling insights into the value that implementing project management provides to organizations. Key among the findings was that what works for organizations depends upon the value that they seek and the environment in which they operate.

For organizations seeking to enhance the value of their project management capabilities, the key question that must be asked is “What capabilities are actually appropriate for them?” This presentation explores the findings of the Value of PM project in detail, providing organizations with the insight necessary to more precisely define their goals and identify those specific capabilities that will best enable these goals to be realized. Participants will be able to situate their own organizations in the findings and gain insight into what will create – or destroy – the value they seek. For anyone recognizing that greater value from project management is possible, or necessary, this is a presentation that cannot be missed.

When organizations implement project management, what do they actually adopt? What are the reasons and drivers for these implementations? What value is expected, and what value is actually delivered? Most importantly, what do these insights offer you in terms of how you can think about the value of project management within your own organization? This presentation explores these insights and more in what will be a profound and informative insight into the state of project management today.

Change Smorgasbord
Well - we miss April because of travel and May because of the workload caused by Travel.
What we decided to do was answer a collection Change Management Related questions in a very informal format. If you look to these webinars for structure? Then this month you'll be disappointed. I touch about about 20 questions covering the issue of Change Management. Here are a few of them;

--We know that good communication is necessary for Change to happen as smoothly as possible...
Why do we insist on NOT doing this?
-- Does a Change Agent have to 'get into the weeds' as part of their responsibility?
-- How should we handle a Management transition?
-- What do we do when Management tries to implement a Change you know is ill advised?
-- What's the connection between Tactical and Strategic Processes?
-- Is Change driven by a desire for Success or a fear of failure?
-- How can we overcome the resistance to Change for small productivity increases?
-- How do we turn Opponents to Change into Advocates for Change?
-- Why is Soylent Green Like Change Management?

If you're curious about the questions and interested in some answers? Then - the recording is available for your entertainment and edification.

TRIZ Take II: Learn HOW to create new ideas using TRIZ
Available for downloading

A few months ago, I offered a bare bones intro to TRIZ. TRIZ is a body of Problem Solving knowledge and while I am by no means an expert in TRIZ, I barely qualify as a novice... this 'Intro to TRIZ' was very well received... sooo... I searched for someone a little bit more knowledgeable to offer a tad more depth to the discussion.

The 'Ideal Final Result' is a key concept of TRIZ. It helps you liberate your thinking from the present limitations of what is possible, and to focus on the customer, and how to develop your business by getting the customer what she/he really needs. One element of the ideal final result is the use of resources that are already in the problem; resources include energy, people, things, and activities that are already going on. We’ll have examples of using resources to make a situation more ideal, that you can use in your work.

A powerful technique in TRIZ is the elimination of contradictions. “Physical contradictions” is one category that occurs in all organizations. Examples: I want to go to training, I don’t want to go to training. I want to add more employees, I don’t want to add more employees. We’ll learn 4 simple techniques to actually solve these problems.

My guest speaker this month is Ellen Domb.

Ellen Domb, Ph.D., is the founding editor of The TRIZ Journal, and the principal TRIZ consultant for the PQR Group in Upland CA USA. TRIZ is Dr. Domb’s 6th career: she has been a physics professor, an aerospace engineer, an engineering manager, a product line general manager, and a strategic planning/quality improvement consultant. She has been teaching and consulting in TRIZ for 15 years in fields ranging from education to government to electronics to industrial machinery to software development, and will illustrate the class with a variety of examples.

Project Management: Where’s The Value?

Available for downloading.

More than four years ago, one of the most significant research endeavours in the field of project management was launched – an attempt to explore and understand the value of project management to organizations. This study, sponsored in part by the Project Management Institute, is the largest and most significant research study that has been conducted in the field of project management. After an extensive and intensive research process, we can now share what we have learned. This study has involved fielding over 18 teams around the world to conduct case studies with more than 65 organizations. After three years of data collection and analysis, our research team has gained significant insight into what is implemented in organizations that is called project management, and the value these implementations realize.

This month we have a Guest Speaker. Mark Mullaly.
Mark Mullaly is a senior management consultant with over 20 years experience of managing projects in a range of industries, including information technology, communications, utilities, oil & gas, engineering, construction, finance, insurance, the arts and research & development.

TRIZ, Patterns and Metaphors

There's a body of Problem Solving knowledge called 'TRIZ', that is almost unknown in most circles. It's unknown even to those who are familiar with people/methodologies like Kepner-Tregoe, Osborne & Parnes, Wicklegren and Polya. Here I speak with some experience because even though I studied PS in University I was mostly oblivious to TRIZ until fairly recently.

While I am by no means an expert in TRIZ, I barely qualify as a novice... I know enough to introduce others to what it's about and why it might be the most undervalued way of thinking about the world and the problems we encounter.

In a Nutshell? TRIZ is the means by which we can stop re-inventing the Wheel.

In this session I'll explore a very small subset of TRIZ concepts. The thinking behind TRIZ and some personal opinions on why it isn't currently the next 'big thing'.

If you already know something about TRIZ? Attend to ensure I'm not leading the world astray! I don't think I'll be doing that - but that's the problem with ignorance.

If you've never heard of TRIZ AND if you solve problems as a part of your life? Then attend so that I can introduce you to a new world of problem solving strategies.

And if neither of the above are good enough reasons? Then attend just because I rarely(?) waste your time.

My Guarantee? To not waste your time. To offer some ideas that you can put to work tomorrow.

Mistakes: Making, Avoiding and Dealing with Them.

If you're human - you make mistakes... and you likely have a great deal of difficulty admitting to those mistakes.

In this session we'll take a look at several different categories of mistakes, and what we might be able to do to avoid some of them. We won't suffer under the delusion that there is a silver bullet that will allow us to avoid all mistakes - that might perhaps be the biggest mistake we could make in this type of presentation.

The more useful portion of the discussion will revolve around how we deal with mistakes once we make them... and we will make them - so we'll have lots of opportunity to practice any advice we might stumble across.

Now... when you sign up for this session, you'll have an opportunity to contribute to the discussion via a handful of questions. Your answers are anonymous in that no names will be attached to your input if I use your thoughts in the presentation.

If the questions asked weren't enough to contain all your thoughts on this? Send more info to me at pdejager@technobility.com --- you KNOW I like sifting through this type of input, so please take the time to inundate me with your gaffes and errors. EVEN if you won't be attending the webinar on Dec 11th but instead listen to it later... please provide input to the process.

The Art of the Pitch: 10 Tips for selling your idea to Management

You've spent days, weeks or months developing your great idea and are ready to take it to senior management.

Chances are, you're so close to it you haven't asked yourself ten basic questions that can make the difference between failure and success.

Veteran journalist and marketing writer Bob Scheier offers ten quick tips for making sure your idea is as clear, compelling and brilliant to the listener as it is to you.

I'm pleased to welcome Bob Scheier as our second webinar guest. Bob is a veteran information technology journalist and marketing writer. A former senior writer and editor for PCWeek (now eWeek) and Computerworld, since 2000 he has produced marketing collateral for top IT providers including Microsoft, EMC, AT&T and Symantec. In addition to continuing to write for top IT trade publications, he blogs on marketing and technology trends.

Just Trust Me!

What is 'Trust'? Why should 'Trust' be a topic of interest to us as managers or as employees? What do we even mean when we talk about 'Trust'? What can we do to build it... and how do we erode it?

I think those are good questions to get us started - but are they enough to get anyone to devote an hour of their time to listening to a webinar on 'Trust'?

That all depends on whether or not you 'Trust' me to deliver something of value.

And that self referential loop is what we're going to build upon. If you decide to register for this session? Then your responses to some of the questions during the registration process will shape the conversation/direction of the webinar. In other words - we will end up exploring how we use Trust to make decisions.

Will it be a good use of your time? You'll just have to Trust me...

Mind, Management and Misdemeanors
Recording Available

The webinar in August was a special event. I decided to bring on a Guest Speaker, Jamie O'Boyle from Cultural Studies and Analysis. Enjoy.

Over 90% of our thinking occurs below our conscious threshold. That means that “facts” are what we use to validate decisions that we have already made at an unconscious level.

Jamie O'Boyle, an expert in human thinking processes, values, and behavior, will analyze the “black box” of the human mind on projects – The unconscious assumptions, cognitive defaults, and cultural biases that influences how a group makes decisions, for better and for worse.

This process begins by comparing the ideal project with the way project implementation actually works in real time and space—and, most important of all, how the project operates inside the brain.

Human factors include loss aversion, how people project the future (poorly), how we estimate probabilities, hierarchy, estimating value, and other unconscious processes that affect our decision-making without us being aware of it.

The best-planned project can fail unless it appreciates and incorporates a working knowledge of the way people actually think about and act to realize any project, large or small. Understanding human factors is essential. Anything people have been doing for the past 35,000 years isn’t going to change anytime soon.

This short presentation (50 min) was sponsored by Peter de Jager's ongoing webinar series.

Time Management: For those who don't have any!
Recording available

We are each given a score and four hours each day - with the exception of frequent fliers who sometimes get more, and sometimes get less depending on whether they're flying East or West. It's a rare individual who has more time than they need. Most of us would willingly buy more time if such a thing were possible, but we can't... so? How do we use what we have as efficiently as possible?

Yes, this session will cover some of the more obvious solutions, but as always I hope to bring some lesser used strategies and tactics to the discussion. Some that immediately come to mind? The Virtue of Laziness, Leverage, Drastic measures, Pretend you were to die tomorrow!, a Stoic approach, some simple arithmetic and of course... some surprises.

So? If you can find the time? (If you can't then it obvious you really should...) Join us on June 30th

Seven Simple Strategies for Solving Any Problem
We all Solve Problems on a daily basis - in fact, if it wasn't for problems to solve - most of us wouldn't have jobs. But how good are we at solving problems? Based upon my experience, most of us tend to jump into a problem with both feet and seldom do much thinking or analysis before we start wrestling a problem to the ground.

In this session we looked at some very simple, yet powerful ways, to approach a problem. We tried to provide a few ways to sneak up on a solution, rather than charging at it. In short? How to think differently once you discover the old ways aren't working!

Creating Change - without Authority and only Influence
While we often don't have any authority or power to initiate a Change, we always have influence. Regardless of where we sit in the power structure, it is possible to become a driving force for Change. It's not easy, it might cost us more than we are willing to pay, but making Change happen is always an option. All you have to have is a passion for the needed Change and a willingness to make an effort, sometimes a supreme effort, to make that Change a reality. This session will draw on my experience, your stories, proven techniques, guerilla tactics and of course - some subversive ideas... in short? A collection of ideas that will either get you fired... or possibly result in the Change you're passionate about.

Lost or Losing your Job
Of all the Changes we experience in the workplace, job loss is the most devastating. The Change involved in implementing a company wide ERP system, pales next to the harsh reality of Job loss.

This is not a motivational rah! rah! talk. The reality is that your employment status will be the same after, as it was before, you listen to this webinar. What I offer instead of clichés and platitudes are some insights into how we respond to these events, and how we might better deal with the turmoil going on between our ears. In other words? This webinar is not be about finding employment, but about dealing with the chaos inside so that you're better able to focus on the task that you're really interested in... finding employment.

Creating Good and Bad Presentations.
Have you ever sat through a good presentation? How about a Bad one? One where you shake your watch in disbelief saying to yourself "It MUST be broken... time cannot be moving this slowly, or painfully!" - In this session... yes... we'll cover the basics ie. Know your material, use of humor, Use of Threes - but we'll also focus on how presentations can go wrong... and some of the subtleties of communicating from the stage AND in casual conversation.

The Building Blocks of Resistance
We don't resist Change as much as we resist being Changed... We like to have a say in what Changes we embrace - and for good reason - this mini-presentation will explore a dozen or so aspects of Change that motivate resistance - such as risk, ambiguity, fear etc. as well as how those reasons make themselves known and more importantly what we, as Change Agents, need to do to minimize their effects.

So? You're a Change Agent - How's that working out for you?
The title 'Change Agent' is an embedded part of the Change Management lexicon. What does it mean to be a 'Change Agent'? What is our role? Who are (or what are) we responsible to? What are the challenges? Pitfalls? Bear traps - in our path? How do we (can we?) avoid them? If you're interested in a different perspective all this all too commonly used term... then

On Predicting the Future
Have you ever wondered why it's so difficult to predict the future? Aside from all the obvious reasons?

In this session, partly tongue in cheek - but mostly an honest look at how we fail, and how we succeed at predicting what might happen -  I'll offer a few ideas, a few musings, some real life examples, some observable patterns in how we look at what might be, and finally a few lessons to take away and apply to our thinking.

My goal is to poke fun at ourselves and  arrive at a few ways to look at the future that will make 'predicting' less embarrassing and more useful.

Details for PDU credit for viewing the recorded sessions.

If you are a PMI member and 'collect' PDUs (Professional Development Units) then here is some important information for you.

1) When you listen to a webinar live, after registering and signing in via the information sent to you, then we have a data record that you attended the live session. After each webinar we send out information regarding how to claim your Category 3 PDU at no charge to you. We will continue to offer this free PDU to PMI members who attend the session live as it is being broadcast. It takes us very little effort to do this. A single e-mail blast goes out to the 125+ listeners who fall into this catgory each month.

2) We now have the ability to provide a Category A PDU to those PMI Members who cannot attend live but instead download and view the recorded session after the live event - however this is not offered for free as there is considerably more work involved on our part.

Starting with the last two webinars (located at webinars.technobility.com)
Difficult Or Different? Effective Communication Strategies
A Ramble through Gambles: A Look at Risk Management

There is a PDU code embedded in the presentation. If you watch the webinar? You can't miss it... it's a big Yellow tag - like the one above - and it contains a PDU verification code. If you wish to claim a PDU for viewing the webinar?

Step #1 - Write down the PDU verification code and date.
Step #2 - To register that you viewed the webinar head to: http://www.interthink.ca/webinars/claim_pdu.php
Step #3 - You will receive a Paypal request for payment of $19.95 USD typically within one business day.
Step #4 - Once payment has been made - you will receive the PDU code and instructions for registering the PDU on the PMI website - again - typically within one business day.

Yes... a little bit complicated... but this is partly to maintain the integrity of the PDU process, and partly to minimize costs on our end.

You can of course watch the recorded session whenever you wish - meaning that past webinars with this code (only two currently available) qualify for a PDU... just grab the code and follow the procedure.

Peter/Mark
