Project
Management/Change Management: Bridging the Gap
July 29th 2010 NOON EDT (NY City time)
Project management and change management practitioners tend to operate in isolation, which hurts both sides. There are plenty of reasons for the two disciplines to be allies, not the least of which is the dismal (30%) success rate of the average change initiative.
In reality, project management and change management are not only complementary, they are interdependent. The value they can generate together has synergistic potential well beyond what either can accomplish on its own. What this requires, however, is more teamwork across their professional boundaries. In particular, each side needs to share more “lessons learned” than they have in the past—lessons that could be beneficial to the other discipline.
In an effort to begin bridging the gap, Daryl will devote most of the webinar session to sharing key learnings from the field of change management that he believes could enhance the effectiveness of project management:
* How “executable” are your projects?
* How can you determine early on the point at which an initiative is particularly susceptible to falling short of its objectives?
* What client and practitioner predispositions are the best indicators of change success?

Attaining Value in Project Management
Attaining Value in Project Management – Practical Insights For Organizations
The results of the international research project ‘Understanding the Value of Project Management’ provide compelling insights into the value that implementing project management provides to organizations. Key among the findings was that what works for organizations depends upon the value that they seek and the environment in which they operate.
For organizations seeking to enhance the value of their project management capabilities, the key question that must be asked is “What capabilities are actually appropriate for them?” This presentation explores the findings of the Value of PM project in detail, providing organizations with the insight necessary to more precisely define their goals and identify those specific capabilities that will best enable these goals to be realized. Participants will be able to situate their own organizations in the findings and gain insight into what will create – or destroy – the value they seek. For anyone recognizing that greater value from project management is possible, or necessary, this is a presentation that cannot be missed.
When organizations implement project management, what do they actually adopt? What are the reasons and drivers for these implementations? What value is expected, and what value is actually delivered? Most importantly, what do these insights offer you in terms of how you can think about the value of project management within your own organization? This presentation explores these insights and more in what will be a profound and informative insight into the state of project management today.

Change
Smorgasbord
Well - we miss April because of travel and May because of the workload
caused by Travel.
What we decided to do was answer a collection Change Management
Related questions in a very informal format. If you look to these webinars
for structure? Then this month you'll be disappointed. I touch about about
20 questions covering the issue of Change Management. Here are a few of
them;
--We know that good communication is necessary for Change to happen as smoothly as possible...
Why do we insist on NOT doing this?
-- Does a Change Agent have to 'get into the weeds' as part of their responsibility?
-- How should we handle a Management transition?
-- What do we do when Management tries to implement a Change you know is ill advised?
-- What's the connection between Tactical and Strategic Processes?
-- Is Change driven by a desire for Success or a fear of failure?
-- How can we overcome the resistance to Change for small productivity increases?
-- How do we turn Opponents to Change into Advocates for Change?
-- Why is Soylent Green Like Change Management?
If you're curious about the questions and interested in some answers?
Then - the recording is available for your entertainment and edification.

TRIZ Take II: Learn HOW to create new ideas using TRIZ
Available for downloading
A few months ago, I offered a bare bones intro to TRIZ. TRIZ is a body of Problem Solving knowledge and while I am by no means an expert in TRIZ,
I barely qualify as a novice... this 'Intro to TRIZ' was very well received... sooo... I searched for someone a little bit more
knowledgeable to offer a tad more depth to the discussion.
The 'Ideal Final Result' is a key concept of TRIZ. It helps you liberate your thinking from the present limitations of what is possible, and to focus on the customer, and how to develop your business by getting the customer what she/he really needs. One element of the ideal final result is the use of resources that are already in the problem; resources include energy, people, things, and activities that are already going on. We’ll have examples of using resources to make a situation more ideal, that you can use in your work.
A powerful technique in TRIZ is the elimination of contradictions. “Physical contradictions” is one category that occurs in all organizations. Examples: I want to go to training, I don’t want to go to training. I want to add more employees, I don’t want to add more employees. We’ll learn 4 simple techniques to actually solve these problems.
My guest speaker this month is Ellen Domb.
Ellen Domb, Ph.D., is the founding editor of The TRIZ Journal, and the principal TRIZ consultant for the PQR Group in Upland CA USA. TRIZ is Dr. Domb’s 6th career: she has been a physics professor, an aerospace engineer, an engineering manager, a product line general manager, and a strategic planning/quality improvement consultant. She has been teaching and consulting in TRIZ for 15 years in fields ranging from education to government to electronics to industrial machinery to software development, and will illustrate the class with a variety of examples.

Project Management: Where’s The Value?
Available for downloading.
More than four years ago, one of the most significant research endeavours in the field of project management was launched – an attempt to explore and understand the value of project management to organizations. This study, sponsored in part by the Project Management Institute, is the largest and most significant research study that has been conducted in the field of project management. After an extensive and intensive research process, we can now share what we have learned. This study has involved fielding over 18 teams around the world to conduct case studies with more than 65 organizations. After three years of data collection and analysis, our research team has gained significant insight into what is implemented in organizations that is called project management, and the value these implementations realize.
This month we have a Guest Speaker. Mark Mullaly.
Mark Mullaly is a senior management consultant with over 20 years experience of managing projects in a range of industries, including information technology, communications, utilities, oil & gas, engineering, construction, finance, insurance, the arts and research & development.

TRIZ, Patterns
and Metaphors
Recording
available.
There's a body of Problem Solving knowledge called 'TRIZ', that is almost unknown in most circles. It's unknown even to those who are familiar with people/methodologies like Kepner-Tregoe, Osborne & Parnes, Wicklegren and Polya. Here I speak with some experience because even though I studied PS in University I was mostly oblivious to TRIZ until fairly recently.
While I am by no means an expert in TRIZ, I barely qualify as a novice... I know enough to introduce others to what it's about and why it might be the most undervalued way of thinking about the world and the problems we encounter.
In a Nutshell? TRIZ is the means by which we can stop re-inventing the Wheel.
In this session I'll explore a very small subset of TRIZ concepts. The thinking behind TRIZ and some personal opinions on why it isn't currently the next 'big thing'.
If you already know something about TRIZ? Attend to ensure I'm not leading the world astray! I don't think I'll be doing that - but that's the problem with ignorance.
If you've never heard of TRIZ AND if you solve problems as a part of your life? Then attend so that I can introduce you to a new world of problem solving strategies.
And if neither of the above are good enough reasons? Then attend just because I rarely(?) waste your time.
My Guarantee? To not waste your time. To offer some ideas that you can put to work tomorrow.

Mistakes: Making, Avoiding and Dealing with Them.
Available
for downloading
If you're human - you make mistakes... and you likely have a great deal of difficulty admitting to those mistakes.
In this session we'll take a look at several different categories of mistakes, and what we might be able to do to avoid some of them. We won't suffer under the delusion that there is a silver bullet that will allow us to avoid all mistakes - that might perhaps be the biggest mistake we could make in this type of presentation.
The more useful portion of the discussion will revolve around how we deal with mistakes once we make them... and we will make them - so we'll have lots of opportunity to practice any advice we might stumble across.
Now... when you sign up for this session, you'll have an opportunity to contribute to the discussion via a handful of questions. Your answers are anonymous in that no names will be attached to your input if I use your thoughts in the presentation.
If the questions asked weren't enough to contain all your thoughts on this? Send more info to me at pdejager@technobility.com --- you KNOW I like sifting through this type of input, so please take the time to inundate me with your gaffes and errors. EVEN if you won't be attending the webinar on Dec 11th but instead listen to it later... please provide input to the process.

Just Trust Me!
Recording Available:
What is 'Trust'? Why should 'Trust' be a topic of interest to us as managers or as employees? What do we even mean when we talk about 'Trust'? What can we do to build it... and how do we erode it?
I think those are good questions to get us started - but are they enough to get anyone to devote an hour of their time to listening to a webinar on 'Trust'?
That all depends on whether or not you 'Trust' me to deliver something of value.
And that self referential loop is what we're going to build upon. If you decide to register for this session? Then your responses to some of the questions during the registration process will shape the
conversation/direction of the webinar. In other words - we will end up exploring how we use Trust to make decisions.
Will it be a good use of your time? You'll just have to Trust me...

Mind,
Management and Misdemeanors
Recording Available
The webinar in August was a special event. I decided to bring on a Guest
Speaker, Jamie O'Boyle from
Cultural Studies and Analysis. Enjoy.
Over 90% of our thinking occurs below our conscious threshold. That means that “facts” are what we use to validate decisions that we have already made at an unconscious level.
Jamie O'Boyle, an expert in human thinking processes, values, and behavior, will analyze the “black box” of the human mind on projects – The unconscious assumptions, cognitive defaults, and cultural biases that influences how a group makes decisions, for better and for worse.
This process begins by comparing the ideal project with the way project implementation actually works in real time and space—and, most important of all, how the project operates inside the brain.
Human factors include loss aversion, how people project the future (poorly), how we estimate probabilities, hierarchy, estimating value, and other unconscious processes that affect our decision-making without us being aware of it.
The best-planned project can fail unless it appreciates and incorporates a working knowledge of the way people actually think about and act to realize any project, large or small. Understanding human factors is essential. Anything people have been doing for the past 35,000 years isn’t going to change anytime soon.
This short presentation (50 min) was sponsored by Peter de Jager's ongoing webinar series.

Time Management: For those who don't have any!
Recording available
We are each given a score and four hours each day - with the exception of frequent fliers who sometimes get more, and sometimes get less depending on whether they're flying East or West.
It's a rare individual who has more time than they need. Most of us would willingly buy more time if such a thing were possible, but we can't... so? How do we use what we have as efficiently as possible?
Yes, this session will cover some of the more obvious solutions, but as always I hope to bring some lesser used strategies and tactics to the discussion.
Some that immediately come to mind? The Virtue of Laziness, Leverage, Drastic measures, Pretend you were to die tomorrow!, a Stoic approach, some simple arithmetic and of course... some surprises.
So? If you can find the time? (If you can't then it obvious you really should...) Join us on June 30th

Seven
Simple Strategies for Solving Any Problem
We all Solve Problems on a daily basis - in fact, if it wasn't for problems to solve - most of us wouldn't have jobs. But how good are we at solving problems? Based upon my experience, most of us tend to jump into a problem with both feet and seldom do much thinking or analysis before we start wrestling a problem to the ground.
In this session we looked at some very simple, yet powerful ways, to approach a problem.
We tried to provide a few ways to sneak up on a solution, rather than charging at it. In short? How to think differently once you discover the old ways aren't working!

Creating Change - without Authority and only Influence
While we often don't have any authority or power to initiate a Change, we
always have influence. Regardless of where we sit in the power structure,
it is possible to become a driving force for Change. It's not easy, it
might cost us more than we are willing to pay, but making Change happen is
always an option. All you have to have is a passion for the needed Change
and a willingness to make an effort, sometimes a supreme effort, to make
that Change a reality. This session will draw on my experience, your
stories, proven techniques, guerilla tactics and of course - some
subversive ideas... in short? A collection of ideas that will either get
you fired... or possibly result in the Change you're passionate
about.

Lost
or Losing your Job
Of all the Changes we experience in the workplace, job loss is the most devastating. The
Change involved in implementing a company wide ERP system, pales next to the harsh reality of Job loss.
This is not a motivational rah! rah! talk. The reality is that your employment status will be the same after, as it was before, you listen to this
webinar. What I offer instead of
clichés and platitudes are some insights into how we respond to these events, and how we might better
deal with the turmoil going on between our ears. In other words? This webinar
is not be about finding employment, but about dealing with the chaos inside so that you're better able to focus on the task that you're really interested in... finding employment.

Creating
Good and Bad Presentations.
Have you ever sat through a good presentation? How about a Bad one? One
where you shake your watch in disbelief saying to yourself "It MUST
be broken... time cannot be moving this slowly, or painfully!" - In
this session... yes... we'll cover the basics ie. Know your material, use
of humor, Use of Threes - but we'll also focus on how presentations can go
wrong... and some of the subtleties of communicating from the stage AND in
casual conversation.

The
Building Blocks of Resistance
We don't resist Change as much as we resist being Changed... We like to
have a say in what Changes we embrace - and for good reason - this
mini-presentation will explore a dozen or so aspects of Change that
motivate resistance - such as risk, ambiguity, fear etc. as well as how
those reasons make themselves known and more importantly what we, as Change
Agents, need to do to minimize their effects.

So?
You're a Change Agent - How's that working out for you?
The title 'Change Agent' is an embedded part of the
Change Management lexicon. What does it mean to be a 'Change Agent'? What
is our role? Who are (or what are) we responsible to? What are the
challenges? Pitfalls? Bear traps - in our path? How do we (can we?) avoid
them? If you're interested in a different perspective all this all too

On Predicting the Future
-- November 2008 (45 minutes of your time)
Have you ever
wondered why it's so difficult to predict the future? Aside from all the
obvious reasons?
In this session, partly tongue in cheek - but mostly an honest look at how
we fail, and how we succeed at predicting what might happen - I'll
offer a few ideas, a few musings, some real life examples, some observable
patterns in how we look at what might be, and finally a few lessons to
take away and apply to our thinking.
My goal is to poke fun at ourselves and arrive at a few ways to
look at the future that will make 'predicting' less embarrassing and more
useful.
